Stotesbury Regatta
General Information Print

The Stotesbury Cup Regatta is the oldest and largest high school rowing event of the year.  This coming year, on  May 20-21, 2011, more than 5,000 student rowers from 180 high schools around the nation will converge on Philadelphia. SC Crew will join the more than 15,000 spectators that line the banks of the Schuylkill River to watch their favorite students race the 1,500 meter course, which starts above the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and heads downstream to the Columbia Bridge in the historic Fairmount Park. A map of the course is available on the Regatta's website.

General Information

  • Although not all rowers qualify to row at Stotes, make reservations early.  A block of rooms will be reserved in the hotel with the crew members, but these often get sold out.
  • South County has an impressive hospitality tent just up the race course from the Grand Stand viewing area on the site is a picturesque seat along the Schuylkill River.
  • Don't forget to bring chairs and clothing for warm and cold weather.  We had both last year!  It seems like we always get rain at Stotesbury, so pack the umbrellas, ponchos, rain gear, and blankets.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat if it going to be sunny.
  • Seating is available in the Grand Stand, but bring a chair if you want to sit down in the hospitality tent.
  • Breakfast and lunch are prepared by parents with grills.  Plan on providing a food item that is assigned and pay for additional family members.  The food is delicious and worth it!
  • Bathrooms are temporary port-a-potties. While they do a decent job of trying to keep them stocked with paper and hand sanitizer, they don't always succeed. Come prepared by bringing our own supplies.
  • It is difficult to impossible to drive to the regatta site.  Plan to walk from the hotel or take a cab to the start of the course.

Parking

Parking along Kelly Drive (adjacent to the river and the Hospitality Tents) is restricted during the regatta. Most parking will be on the plateau above, $12 per vehicle (2009 costs, subjected to change). ($2 per vehicle goes to the regatta. The remainder goes to the city and the vendor.) The Regatta provides free shuttle bus service from the parking areas to the venue and back again. There is also a well-maintained, family-friendly walking path thru the woods down to Kelly Drive and the regatta venue.

  1. During the regatta, Kelly Drive will be closed to the general public from the start line to just below the Athlete's Village. Access to this area (which has a one-way traffic pattern, southbound from the Canoe Club) is limited to those with a Regatta Parking Pass.
  2. Parking passes will be distributed to coaches in limited numbers at registration on Thursday afternoon at Lloyd Hall (1 for the smallest programs, 5 or 6 for the very large programs). Those with Regatta Parking Pass will be allowed to parking diagonally on Kelly Drive. Those without a Regatta Parking Pass will be directed to Regatta Parking on the plateau above Kelly Drive. Each school should plan to distribute their allocated parking passes to vehicles bringing food into the venue.  "Chuck wagons" will require separate parking passes. If you are bringing a chuck wagon, you'll need two parking passes, one for the tow vehicle and one for the chuck wagon.
  3. Entry to the venue thru the police barricades on Kelly Drive at Strawberry Mansion bridge will be restricted to vehicles with a valid Stotesbury parking pass and school buses. PSRA parking passes will not be honored.
  4. All other parking will be on the grassy plateau above Kelly Drive. Cost will be $12 per vehicle. The regatta will provide complimentary shuttle bus service. Four school buses will be in constant rotation.
  5. For those who would rather walk than wait for a shuttle bus, Ormiston Trail takes you from the parking on the plateau thru the woods down to the regatta venue. The 1/4 mile trail is in very good condition and suitable for young children and adults. Look for the balloons that mark the head of the trail at Reservoir Drive and Randolph Drive.
  6. Parking on the grass on either side of Kelly Drive is absolutely forbidden. Parking is only permitted on the river side of Kelly Drive; no parking is permitted on the other side of the road. Violators will be ticketed by the Philadelphia Police.
  7. School buses should parallel park along the river side curb beyond Columbia Bridge at the finish line.
  8. Cars and vans should park diagonally at the river side curb.
  9. Parking is permitted in the lot near the grandstands. The lot at the Canoe Club is reserved for volunteers and officials.

Team Hospitality Tent

If parents and families will be traveling to Stotesbury to watch the races and would like to eat from our food tent (grilled food, sandwiches, hot breakfast foods, snacks, etc.), please let Lynn Warner know at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by the Sunday before so they can buy extra food and plan accordingly.  The 2009 cost (subject to change) to eat from the food tent was $15 for one person and $25 for two people for the entire time in Philadelphia.  Just add the additional fees to your Stotesbury check.

If you are able to provide pasta salad or fresh fruit salad, please let Lynn Warner know as well by the Sunday before.  Salads should be brought in Ziploc bags for easier packing.
