Mathews High School Crew team invites you to attend the Annual Mathews HS Regatta on May 7, 2011. For the enjoyment of all, please take this opportunity to read the following important information.
- We hope for a beautiful day on the river. Bring chairs, sunscreen, etc. according to the weather.
- We will have breakfast and lunch available at the Regatta site and think you will find local handmade crab cake sandwiches and other delights more nourishing and tasty than Hardies/McD’s or other fast food!
- The only parking available is in the paid parking lot. The fee is $5.00 per car. This is the only entrance fee you will pay and this is one of the few ways our team has to make money to help defray the cost of hosting the regatta and maintaining Williams Wharf. Unlike most high school sports, we have no gate fee per person and our school division requires each team to have a fundraiser. Thank you for supporting ours.
- The shuttle bus will run every 10-15minutes for the 0.5-mile ride. It is also a beautiful flat road and a pleasant walk.
- The sheriff’s office will be contacted for any cars that are parked on dirt lanes or along the road and will be towed to another location in the county.
- If your team would like to put up a tent please ask your coach to pass this info on to our regatta chairman by e-mail. Provide the size, so we can plan a location for your tent. Tents 10 x 10 will be given priority for location. Tents larger will be allowed to be placed if space is available. No tent can be erected without getting permission from the grounds crew Sat AM. We will have an assigned spot for eac h requested tent.
- We would like to provide space for all participants & spectators to enjoy the regatta. Plans cannot be made to insure everyone’s needs are met without this information. We found that the congestion at the wharf last May caused issues that we plan on avoiding this year.
- PLEASE, NO DOGS!! They don’t use the porta potty like we do and its hard enough already to carry shells without having to dodge little unpleasant piles.
- There will be food sold by us and our local volunteer organizations. The profits help fund scholarships for our high school students, help support the Wharf and rowing programs and also provide help for the needy during the year.
- Due to safety and smoke concerns, cooking on grills of any kind is not permitted at the regatta site. Thanks for your cooperation.
- We cannot allow any merchandise, such as clothing, to be sold by any person or group without prior permission and payment of vending fees that all other groups are required to pay. If this policy is violated, the team associated with the violation will forfeit all winnings.

Schedule
- Report time for Rowers and chaperones will be communicated separately but is typically around 3:30 am Saturday, in the front parking lot of SCSS, near the school's main entrance. The school buses will typically depart no later than 3:45 am. The buses will NOT wait for late rowers or chaperones, as the coxswains and coaches need to be at Mathews before 7:30 am for mandatory meetings.
- The buses will return to SCSS sometime between 7:00 and 9:00 pm. Rowers will call parents on the way home to provide a better estimate of the arrival time.
What Rowers Should Bring
- 1 Gallon of DISTILLED water for washing the boats down after the races. This should be brought to practice on the Friday before Mathews; to be loaded into vehicles that will drive down with the bus.
- The Regatta Food/Beverages that they've been assigned
- Money for the following:
- The bus will stop for a fast-food dinner on the return trip
- There are concession stands at the regatta, so rowers can purchase food, regatta apparel, jewelry, etc. (Note that Mathews (usually) has nice tee-shirts. You order them, they make them right there and you pick them up. Approximately $15 - $20 each.)
- Sunscreen
- Additional clothing

Bus Departure / Return
- The school bus will leave SCSS front parking lot (i.e. near school main entrance) at 3:45 a.m. Early departure is required to ensure that coxswains and coaches arrive at Mathews in enough time for meetings starting at 7:30 am. Rowers and chaperones must be at the school NO LATER THAN 3:30 am or buses will likely leave without you!!!! (All rowers and coxswains will ride the bus to and from the regatta unless they have made prior arrangements with Coach King).
- Last year the return time was between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Rowers can use cell phones to call parents for pick up when we get close to home.
- Based on last year's trip, the bus will stop for dinner on the way back (Burger King or equivalent). Rowers should bring money for this as well.
