About SC Crew Print

Our Mission

Our mission is to introduce novices to crew and provide them the opportunity to learn to row in a competitive environment.  Our team provides opportunities for physical training and camaraderie, an outlet for learning and practicing leadership and teamwork, and for promoting athletes that excel academically as well.

The Club

Crew is a club sport in Fairfax County and, as such, is not supported by Fairfax County Public School funds.  Financial support for the program must come from parents, student-athletes and fundraising activities.

Our crew program is sponsored and supported by the non-profit South County Crew Boosters Club which manages the rowing program by:

  1. Hiring the coaches
  2. Procuring and maintaining the SCSS Crew Team equipment
  3. Raising funds through individual assessments and fundraising activities.
  4. Coordinating in- and off-season activities

The Boosters Club is managed by a Board of Directors which is elected annually by Booster Club members.

The contributions of both the student-athletes and their families financially and through participation in work activities are the cornerstone of the program's success.

The Team

South County Crew team is a single coed team.  The team operates with one head coach, varsity coaches for girls and boys, and assistant coaches for girls and boys.  Girls and boys row in separate boats during practice as well as during regattas.  Most other activities (e.g. fundraising, workdays, land training) are done combined.

Rowers are SCSS students; hence participation is under the auspices of the SCSS Student Activities (Athletics) Department.  Rowers need to meet the same academic requirements as other SCSS student athletes, and are eligible for the same awards such as varsity letters.
